Harry Kane would take Manchester United to a “title-winning level” team if the Red Devils can agree a deal with Tottenham for the striker this summer, reckons United legend Mark Hughes.

The 27-year-old is understood to want to leave Spurs this summer with United, Chelsea and Manchester City making clear to his representatives that they would be interested in a deal.

England captain Kane is under contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until 2024 however and so Spurs have a strong hand in negotiations.

The frontman’s £150million valuation will also make it tricky for Spurs’ Premier League rivals to prise him from the north Londoners.

But United may have assets to offer in part-exchange with Gary Neville suggesting Anthony Martial, Daniel James and Jesse Lingard could all be used to tempt Spurs into doing business.

And Hughes reckons if United could broker an agreement with Spurs’ tough-negotiating chairman Daniel Levy, they could rival Manchester City for the league title next term.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been crowned champions three times in the past four years and ended up 12 points clear of the Red Devils come the conclusion of the 2020-21 Premier League season.

“I think Kane could take United back to a title-winning level,” Hughes told Sky Sports News.

“From watching United this season, the one thing that’s always struck me is that when they don’t have that focal point to the attack.

“When Cavani isn’t playing and the likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial or Mason Greenwood are playing up top, it doesn’t quite function as well as it should.

“I think United are always better when Cavani is actually down the middle. He’s done great for United this year and I think it is great news for them that they’ve been able to keep him for another year.

“Whether that means they aren’t going to pursue Kane really forcefully because they feel in the short-term that they’ve got a solution.

“I think from my point of view, with my red goggles on, I would love Harry Kane to be there because I think he’d be made to measure for Manchester United.

“He’d have a lot of good talent around him, and they’d give him that platform hopefully to win trophies because clearly Harry Kane is at the point of his career where that’s what’s missing from his career.

“He wants to make sure that the next step, if he does make a step, is going to guarantee trophies.

“It’s not about money, it’s not about prestige – it’s about making your mark in the game.”

Hughes also admitted that Kane is “clearly” the “right level” to be a suitable replacement for Man City legend Sergio Aguero, the club’s all-time top goalscorer who will depart the Etihad next month.

But The Times say United manager Solskjaer is pushing the club’s hierarchy to make a move for Kane, who ended the season with the most goals and most assists of any player in England’s top flight.

He scored 23 times and laid on 14 assists for the Londoners despite them finishing seventh and five points off of Chelsea in the last Champions League spot.

On-loan attacker Gareth Bale, who scored twice in Sunday’s 4-2 defeat of Leicester, said of Kane: “He’s a fantastic player and nobody can deny that. He’s had another fantastic season again, but he’s a Tottenham Hotspur player.

“Everyone wants him here at the club. He’s a massive player for us here and everyone wants him to stay.”
