- Win leaves Spurs sixth in the table and three points behind Chelsea in fourth
Harry Kane admitted Tottenham’s recent results have been embarrassing for the players as his side put a damaging week behind them to beat Aston Villa 2-0.
Carlos Vinicius put the visitors ahead before Kane sealed the three points with a second-half penalty to give Spurs a much-needed win and lift them up to sixth in the table.
And Tottenham’s captain believes the performance was a good response to the criticism they have faced this week after losing to Arsenal and then collapsing in the Europa League against Dinamo Zagreb.

‘I think whenever you go through a difficult couple of games like we have, obviously a London derby and then going out of the Europa League in that fashion, it was embarrassing for us as players,’ Kane said.
‘The only way we can give back to the fans and the club is get out on the pitch and show what we’re made of and I think we’ve done that today.
‘The last couple of games have not been good enough in all areas, so we knew we had to bounce back just before the international break as well, we didn’t want to go away with three losses or two losses and a draw.

‘We knew we needed to win and the boys put in a great shift and we deserved it.’
Spurs are now three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, and still have a trip to Wembley to face Manchester City in the League Cup final to look forward to, a game that could go a long way to lifting the current mood at the club.
Kane was asked after the match what was different in the performance compared to the defeats to Arsenal and Dinamo Zagreb, and the striker believes the team’s mentality was key to the more positive result.
‘The attitude, the last couple of games we’ve dropped below our standards in that aspect, working hard together, all in the same direction,’ he said.
‘We just lost a bit of that and it was nice to get that back today. You saw everyone fighting, putting their bodies on the line and that’s what we’re going to need from now until the end of the season if we want to give that top four a push.’
Kane hailed his side’s attitude and commitment in the win and has not given up top four hopes
