Tottenham could convince Harry Kane to stay with the club in the long-term by showing ambition in the transfer window, according to Teddy Sheringham. Kane pushed hard for a move to Manchester City in the summer and has also been linked with Manchester United ahead of what is set to be a crucial time for the England captain.
Kane’s attempts to force through a move from Spurs to Man City became a saga before the start of the season, as he played every card he had.
Ultimately, Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy got his way by using Kane’s contract with Tottenham until June 2024 to block the move and keep the striker at the club for another season.
The 28-year-old is likely to agitate for a move once again this summer, unless Spurs can put forward a good argument as to why he can achieve his goals by staying put.
Sheringham won nothing in five years with Spurs before leaving to join Manchester United in 1997, where he helped win three Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the Champions League.

He believes the only way Tottenham can keep Kane is if they back Antonio Conte in the transfer market and go all out to add to the January additions of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur.
“Harry’s probably been in the same boat [as I was]. He thought that he was never going to win anything at Tottenham,” Sheringham told Genting Casino.
“I know he came close in the Champions League, but I think he felt, as he looked around the dressing room, ‘I’m not going to win anything, I’m not going to be performing at top level consistently at this club, so I’m going to leave. I want to go and play with the top players,’ and I think he felt that wasn’t going to happen at Spurs.

“If that can change, if he can see players coming into the club, players like these two Juventus boys, if they perform and become top players in the Premier League, that will change Harry Kane’s mind, without a doubt, and he will say, ‘I love it here in London, this is my home. Life is rosy, I’m enjoying my football, my family life’s great, I don’t have to be travelling up and down the country, I don’t want to be travelling unnecessarily. My life’s back on the right route, my professional career is back on the right route, so I’m quite happy here.’
“I see that change in his mindset from five or six months ago where he wanted to leave. “That’s what I’m seeing from the outside, I don’t know that but that’s the vibe I was getting, I think that is changing in the fact that, ‘Maybe I don’t have to move, maybe things are looking a little bit rosier where I am’.”
Tottenham are currently seventh in the Premier League, four points off fourth-placed West Ham, following their dramatic 3-2 defeat by Southampton on Wednesday night.
However, Spurs have three games in hand on the Hammers and have been much improved since Conte took over from Nuno Espirito Santo in early November.
