Hardman Roy Keane savaged by teammates for admitting he got a ‘lob-on’ in games

Roy Keane was known as a hardman on the pitch – perhaps in more ways than one.

The former all-action midfielder was apparently ridiculed by his teammates after admitting that he sometimes got aroused during matches, even to the point of getting a "lob-on".

At least, that's according to one of his old acquaintances at Nottingham Forest, where he started his career in England.

Keane, now a glowering Sky Sports pundit, played more than 100 games for Forest between 1990 and 1993 before moving to Manchester United, where he spent 12 highly successful years.

At Forest, the Irishman played under the stewardship of legendary manager Brian Clough.

Revered as a tactical genius and maverick man-manager, Clough was also renowned for his principles, and even invited a teenager, Craig Bromfield, to live with his family for five years after hearing about his tricky upbringing.

Craig shared his story on the Undr the Cosh podcast, telling how he was allowed to spend time with the Forest players in close quarters. And he recalled the time young Keane came in for stick from his teammates.

The players were somewhat dejected on the team coach after an away defeat to Manchester City, he said. But the mood soon changed thanks to Keane's bizarre confession.

He said: “We’re playing cards and it’s split into different table. Halfway through the game, Roy has gone quiet and he’s just poked his head around the chair and gone, ‘Lads, I need to ask something.'

“He’s gone, ‘You know when you’re playing, do you sometimes get a semi on? I can’t explain it, it’s just sometimes when I’m running, like today, we hadn’t even scored – we’d only got a corner – and I looked down and I’ve got a lob on.'"

Craig recalled how the squad were sent into hysterics, so, in an attempt to ingratiate himself, he tried to help Keane.

“The players have absolutely launched into him” he continued. “I’ve sat there, being the lovely lad that I am, and I’ve gone, ‘Roy, don’t worry about it, it happens. Sometimes, I get a semi on just sitting on the bus.'

“He was like, ‘Why the f*** would you tell me that? You’ve got one now, haven’t ya? Lads! Lads!’”

Despite being the butt of the joke on this occasion, Bromfield said he had nothing but respect for the notoriously grumpy star and his professional achievements.

He added: “I never ever met anybody at that point who had the passion that Roy had for the game, and the sheer desire. Although I don’t know him, man alive, I’m proud of him for what he did and the person that he’s become."

“The person that he’s become, the way he handles himself, to me he’s a god. I love him even though I don’t know him.”

Keane won seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League with Manchester United. He had a brief spell at Celtic, with whom he won the domestic double, before hanging up his boots in 2006.
