Handful of Chelsea players facing 30% wage reduction after dreadful performances

Chelsea's stars are set to have their wages slashed following the club's cataclysmic car crash of a campaign.

The Blues have nothing left to play for after crashing out of the Champions League last week and five defeats on the bounce under Frank Lampard has left the club and its supporters in a state of previously unimaginable exasperation.

The players have collectively embodied the notion of 'for the love of God, just let it end' for weeks, though their anguish is set to extend into next season with several members of the squad in line for performance-related pay cuts.

Players who have either joined Chelsea or signed new contracts since Todd Boehly took the club over last year had clauses inserted into their deals whereby failure to qualify for the Champions League would result in a substantial decrease in pay.

Defeat to Brentford on Wednesday means it's now mathematically impossible for Chelsea to make the top four, which is bad news for the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk, Reece James and Ben Chilwell, who could see their wages drop by as much as 30%.

How long will it take for Chelsea to win something under Todd Boehly? Let us know in the comments section below.

Boehly has tied down several of the club's younger stars to daringly-lengthy deals, with Fernandez, Mudryk and Noni Madueke all under contract for at least eight more years, which means they'll have plenty of opportunity to up their pay again, especially if Chelsea can bounce back quickly under a new manager.

But the new bonus system runs the risk of disheartening already disheartened players, which is something the Stamford Bridge club can ill afford amid such a calamitous campaign.
