Haaland needs to score 42 goals a season to match Ronaldo's record 700

Erling Haaland will have to score 42 goals a season for the next 13 YEARS to match Cristiano Ronaldo’s record-breaking 700 club goals tally… while Kylian Mbappe will have to net 40 for the next 12 seasons to reach the 37-year-old superstar’s level

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored 700 club goals in an extraordinary career
  • Portuguese star came off the bench to fire Manchester United ahead at Everton
  • Erling Haaland can match Ronaldo’s tally if he scores 42 goals for next 13 years
  • PSG’s Kylian Mbappe is also on track to break the record, later in his career
  • Ronaldo remains nine goals ahead of long-term rival and PSG star Lionel Messi

In case there was any doubt, Cristiano Ronaldo reminded everybody just how good he is after netting a record-breaking 700th club goal on Sunday night.

The Portuguese superstar etched his name into history after his thumping effort against Everton – becoming the first player ever to reach the landmark achievement. But, for how long will it stay that way?

Stats show that PSG’s Kylian Mbappe and Man City’s Erling Haaland are on track to match the superstar’s tally later in their careers, while Lionel Messi could do it this season. Sportsmail crunches the numbers and takes a look at just how quickly Ronaldo’s record could be broken.

Erling Haaland will need 42 goals a season for the next 13 years to match Ronaldo’s record

Stats show PSG duo Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi could score more than Ronaldo

It’s only fair to begin with the Portuguese superstar, given it’s his outstanding achievement that has sparked such discussion.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner notched his 144th goal in Manchester United colours on Sunday night, breaking away from the Everton defence before thumping his strike into the back of the net. In doing so, Ronaldo brought his club goals tally up to 700.

It’s a staggering achievement and the stats do well in paying testament to that fact. Five goals in 31 for Sporting. 144 in 340 for United. 450 in 438 for Real Madrid. 101 in 134 for Juventus. 700 in 945. Simply remarkable.

Aside from PSG’s Lionel Messi, the only active players who come close to matching Ronaldo’s tally are Luis Suarez, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robert Lewandowski – who have 456, 510 and 538 respectively. Still a long way off Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner notched a whopping 450 goals in 438 games at Real Madrid

The 37-year-old will be delighted to finally reach the landmark – knowing that he’ll only have a few more campaigns to extend his tally before hanging up his boots.

With a new generation of elite strikers emerging across the world, there’s no guarantee that the Portuguese star’s record won’t be broken in years to come.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland and PSG star Kylian Mbappe have been touted to lead the world football stage – once Messi and Ronaldo retire – and the current stats do their best to support that.

Haaland has been unstoppable since joining Pep Guardiola’s title-winning side in the summer – already notching 15 Premier League goals in nine appearances.

Man City’s Erling Haaland currently averages 1.67 Premier League goals-per-game

His current career tally sees him sit on 155 goals in 195 games following spells at Bryne, Molde, RB Salzburg, Borussia Dortmund and the current Premier League champions.

That means Haaland has a 0.8 goals-per-game ratio in his career and statistically suggests that he’ll reach the landmark faster than the Portuguese legend.

But, he remains 545 goals behind the former Galactico and will need to score 42 goals every season to reach Ronaldo’s tally by the time he’s 35-years-old.

It’s an incredibly hard ask for even the Norwegian forward but, again, is a testament to the difficulty in Ronaldo’s achievement.

Kylian Mbappe is just 18 goals off becoming PSG’s top goalscorer in the club’s history

Meanwhile PSG star Mbappe, who perhaps hasn’t developed a ruthless reputation up-front like Haaland, in fact has more career club goals to date.

The World Cup winner has notched 209 goals in 288 games for French sides Monaco and PSG – and is just 18 goals off from becoming the Parisian’s top goalscorer ever.

Though his ratio – of 0.74 goals-per-game – is less than that of Haaland and Ronaldo, Mbappe could match the United star’s 700 goal tally in 12 years time – should he be able to score 41 goals a season consecutively.

With the 23-year-old currently playing alongside Neymar and Lionel Messi, while also being rumoured with a move to Real Madrid, it’s likely Mbappe will maintain a strong scoring record his entire career.

Mbappe’s team-mate, Lionel Messi, will likely match Ronaldo’s 700 tally within this campaign

And the Frenchman isn’t the only PSG star that Ronaldo will have to be concerned with either. Messi, who has long-been a thorn in Ronaldo’s side, is just nine goals behind his Portuguese counterpart.

And at the way he’s going, he will match Ronaldo’s tally by the end of the season – if not by Christmas! Five goals in nine appearances this season show the Argentine is back to his best – after only scoring six in last year’s campaign.

Out of all active players, Messi boasts the best goals-to-game ratio. The PSG No 30 has a career average of 0.84 goals-per-game which makes him, statistically, the most prolific player on the planet – despite not having the most goals… yet.

Despite reaching 700 goals quickest, Ronaldo is statistically less prolific than Lionel Messi
