Gylfi Sigurdsson ‘to join’ Wayne Rooney’s DC United in first move since Everton
Wayne Rooney named D.C. United Manager
Former Everton midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson is on the brink of signing for Wayne Rooney’s DC United in the MLS, according to reports. The 33-year-old left the Toffees at the end of the 2021-22 season after his contract expired and has been without a club since.
But according to The Sun, the ex-Iceland international is due to arrive in Washington to meet with former England captain Rooney with a view to signing a deal that will see him continue his career Stateside.
Rooney and Sigurdsson played alongside each other at Goodison Park during the 2017-18 season, after the latter completed a £45m move from Swansea City.
Little has been heard from the Icelandic since dropping out of the picture at Everton, with both Sigurdsson and his wife disabling their social media accounts, but Alexandra Ivarsdottir – a former Miss Iceland from 2008 – reactivated her Instagram account earlier this year and recently posted a family photo herself and Sigurdsson with their young daughter to her 16,800 followers on the platform. The photo was titled ‘La famalia’ with a white heart and globe emoji.
Free agent Sigurdsson received a £1.7m per year contract offer from Galatasaray, according to the Mail, but a move to the Turkish club has failed to materialise.
But a link-up with Rooney in the US looks to be the next step in his once-blossoming career. Rooney played in the MLS for DC United for two seasons from 2018-2019, before moving into management with Derby County.
But after parting ways with the Rams, he returned to the US capital as the team’s coach. DC currently sit ninth in the MLS Eastern Conference and will be hopeful of sneaking into the end-of-season play-offs.

Born in Reykjavík, Sigurdsson started his senior football career in England with Reading, joining the youth team before breaking into the first team three years later. After a couple of loan spells, he left the Royals and spent two years in Germany with 1899 Hoffenheim.
A loan switch to then Premier League club Swansea City saw him impress for the South Wales club and eventually earned him a big-money move to Tottenham Hotspur. After two years at White Hart Lane, he returned to the Swans on a permanent deal and went on to make 112 appearances in all competitions before getting a move to Everton in 2017, where he would spend the next five years of his career.
Sigurdsson has made 78 appearances for Iceland, scoring 25 goals, but has not appeared on the international stage since November 12, 2020.
