Pep Guardiola names VERY surprising member of Man City’s new five-man leaders group powering them towards the Treble, with unsung hero ‘stepping up’ since Fernandinho left the club

  • Manchester City’s leadership group changed with Fernandinho left last summer
  • Pep Guardiola has praised the five-man group for stepping up during this season
  • City are closing in on the prospect of a treble after taking control of the title race

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed a surprising name among Manchester City’s five-member leadership group who have stepped up following the departure of club captain Fernandinho.

The Brazilian midfielder left the club at the end of his contract last summer, following nine seasons at Manchester City.

Fernandinho had served as club captain following Vincent Kompany’s exit after the 2018/19 season, before he moved to the Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense.

Ilkay Gundogan was voted by the Man City squad as Fernandinho’s successor at the start of the season.

Guardiola named the German among those to have stepped up this season, alongside other established stars in Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias and Rodri.

Guardiola surprisingly named Scott Carson despite the veteran goalkeeper’s lack of game time

The Man City boss also surprisingly named Scott Carson among the club’s influential leaders, despite his limited playing time.

Carson has only made the Man City bench four times in the Premier League this season, with the veteran serving as third choice goalkeeper behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega.

The 37-year-old is currently in his fourth season at the club and has only made two appearances for the reigning Premier League champions.

His last appearance came in the Champions League last-16 tie against Sporting Lisbon last March, with the former England goalkeeper playing 17 minutes with City holding a 5-0 lead.

Guardiola has previously praised Carson’s professionalism and claimed the goalkeeper was someone the club’s younger players could learn from.

The revelation that Carson has become a key member of City’s leadership group comes as Guardiola’s side chase a potential treble.

City seized control of the title race on Wednesday by beating challengers Arsenal 4-1 at the Etihad.

The victory saw City move two points behind the Gunners and still have two games in hand.

A Champions League semi-final clash with holders Real Madrid poses another obstacle in treble hunt, while Guardiola’s team will meet Man United in the FA Cup final.

The first all-Manchester FA Cup final could see United prevent their rivals from matching their treble success from 1999.
