Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City are surprised by the levels of Erling Haaland’s goalscoring in a record-breaking debut campaign.

Haaland plundered his 50th of the campaign during Sunday’s victory at Fulham and is one away from setting a new Premier League record.

City face West Ham United on Wednesday and one more strike will take the 22-year-old ahead of Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole’s 34.

‘It’s a surprise for all of us, maybe not for him because he’s done it in a different league. He does it for the success of the team,’ Guardiola said.

‘Of course it’s good for him and the team – it’s a good sign, the magnitude of the record and it’s not been broke for a long time. All will be broken one day. I’m pretty sure he’ll score more in the Premier League from now until the end of the season.’

Guardiola revealed he has felt fatigued by Man City’s schedule as the bid to secure a Treble

Nathan Ake has returned to training for Man City but Kevin De Bruyne remains a doubt

Haaland is certain to surpass Shearer and Cole as City attempt to clinch a fifth title in sux years and go for an historic Treble this term.

The schedule has left Guardiola’s squad fatigued and the manager revealed that has been an issue for him as well – even if the club are used to a packed fixture list. Nathan Ake has returned to training from a hamstring injury, although Kevin De Bruyne looks set to miss West Ham.

‘I’m tired but it’s normal, the players have one month and one week to fight for and we play the last six or seven years in this situation,’ he added.

‘We’ve done it a lot, it’s not the first time. I’d say it’s happened a lot. Everything is here, the mental strength, the best period we can live and we are not tired.

‘We have positive thoughts so we are not tired. Now it’s another opportunity. We have to recover and go for it. If one player is tired, hands up. You have to perform well.’
