Cristiano Ronaldo bore the marks of a tough Premier League encounter as he showed off wounds to his left leg following Manchester United’s defeat at Everton.

The Portuguese struggled throughout, with both goalkeeper David de Gea and interim manager Ralf Rangnick bemoaning Manchester United’s problems going forward on a difficult afternoon at Goodison Park.

Despite appearing to sustain the injury late on, Ronaldo still managed to muster a rare Manchester United effort that was well saved by Jordan Pickford.

The Portuguese player struggled to get into the game throughout, with Manchester United’s forward play being criticised by their manager after the game

When walking off at full-time the Portuguese player appeared to be limping before he rolled down his sock and removed his left shinpad to reveal a nasty stud mark to his lower left leg, perhaps explaining his off-day.

Supporters on Twitter appeared to not have too much sympathy with the Portuguese, however, instead choosing to focus on his rather poor performance.

One wrote: ‘He knew the cameras will point at him, so he pull (sic) his socks down as an excuse to cover this disaster class.’

Another wrote: ‘Let him nurse his injury and hopefully he doesn’t come back to play for Man Utd.’

While another rather cynically wrote ‘Diddums’.

Meanwhile, interim boss Rangnick appeared displeased after the game with Manchester United’s attacking play.

‘If you don’t score a single goal in 95 minutes we have to be disappointed,’ he told BT Sport.

‘We had a good start and should have created more chances out of that domination. Then we concede a deflected shot and lost a bit of our composure.

Cristiano Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure throughout the afternoon

‘The second half we were trying to add creativity with substitutions but we didn’t always take the right decision.

‘We had to do something. We needed a goal and we decided to bring Mata and more verticality with Elanga.’
