Greuther Furth 4-4 Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp's Reds surrender lead

Greuther Furth 4-4 Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp sees his side surrender two-goal lead as Mohamed Salah rescues pre-season draw for the Reds in Germany

  • Liverpool rescued a 4-4 draw in Germany in their second pre-season clash
  • Mohamed Salah scored late after Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead
  • Darwin Nunez scored twice after Luis Diaz opened the scoring in Bavaria

Liverpool avoided an embarrassing pre-season defeat against Bundesliga 2 side Greuther Furth after Mohamed Salah’s late equaliser rescued a 4-4 draw.

The Reds were playing their second warm-up match ahead of the new Premier League season and arrived in Bavaria looking to get more minutes into their legs before flying to Singapore for the second part of their pre-season tour.

Jurgen Klopp named a strong starting side for the behind-closed-doors friendly with summer signing Alexis Mac Allister deployed in midfield alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, although there was no place for Dominik Szoboszlai after he was ruled out through an injury picked up in training.

Liverpool started quickly and were on top in the opening exchanges as their opponents struggled to navigate around the high-press of their English visitors.

Luis Diaz was the bright spark in Liverpool’s attack and broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute after creating space for himself with quick-feet just inside the box before curling a shot past the goalkeeper.

Darwin Nunez scored twice as Liverpool surrendered a two-goal lead in Germany on Monday

Mohamed Salah (second from left) rescued a 4-4 draw after scoring in the closing minutes of play

Nunez’s (left) second goal was the pick of the bunch after he chopped back onto his left-foot and rolled the ball past the goalkeeper

Diogo Jota should have doubled the lead minutes later after being played through one-on-one with the goalkeeper but spurned his shot wide. The Portuguese international later hit the post.

Wholesale changes at half-time saw Klopp name a refreshed side led by Darwin Nunez and Mohammed Salah, with both attackers clicking throughout the second-half as Liverpool’s attack ran riot.

Furth equalised after an Adrian mistake, but Liverpool were soon back on top and scoring at will.

Luis Diaz (middle) opened the scoring with a close-range strike finding the back of the net in the 22nd minute

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp (right) will have questions over his side’s defensive performance in Germany

Nunez bagged his first goal in the 50th minute after being played through by Salah and rounding the keeper, he then scored his second less than 10 minutes later after finding space in Furth’s defence and chopping back and rolling the ball into the bottom corner.

That looked to have cemented Liverpool’s position before the hosts rallied back by scoring three goals in the space of nine minutes to stun Liverpool.

Lukas Petkov capitalised on a lapse in concentration from Liverpool’s defenders to grab a goal, with former Bayern Munich youngster Armindo Sieb scoring twice to put Furth in front for the first time in the game.

Salah popped up in the 89th minute to guide Nunez’s cross into an open goal seal a draw that will leave Klopp pondering whether further defensive reinforcements are needed in the transfer window.
