Greenwood split at Man Utd with Sancho and Antony tipped for axe

Attempted rape charge against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood dropped

Ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Newcastle, news surrounding the Red Devils continues to emerge. Mason Greenwood, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Sheikh Jassim all feature in our daily round-up. Express Sport brings you all the latest you need to know from Old Trafford.

Greenwood causing split

According to the Daily Mail, there is a split at United when it comes to the future of Greenwood.

The 21-year-old hasn’t played for the club since January last year but, per the publication, he’s eager to return.

Some members of staff at United in the football department are open to this happening after Greenwood had charges dropped against him in February.

Others, though, are wary of the commercial consequences that would potentially come from any reintegration.

Greenwood is hoping to stay at Old Trafford, with the forward contracted to the club until 2025.

Man Utd takeover: Man Utd making plans for five players

Sancho and Antony ‘should be sold’

Former United star Paul Parker has named Antony and Jadon Sancho among players he feels his old side should offload this summer.

“I would say that 10 players from the current squad need to leave Man United this season,” Parker told Bettors.

“Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Elanga, Wout Weghorst, Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Antony all have to leave the club.

“And then we can always talk about players like Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and so on who don’t have a future at the club but they are quite obvious.

“A lot of the names that I mentioned are obvious because they are not playing and they want to play regularly.”

‘Strange Jassim decision’

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes it is ‘strange’ that Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are tweaking numbers – because United aren’t worth the £6billion the Glazers want.

“Both Jassim and Ratcliffe are entitled to the same degree of courtesy from Man United so the club had to grant both an extension,” he said.

“It could be that the relatively late showing of data and assets last Friday meant that the number crunchers in each party required a little more time to finalise their offers.

“It is, however, strange that they are fine-tweaking numbers when the Glazers’ asking price is simply not worth it.

“It wouldn’t be a cash-generating business for either party if they end up spending north of £5billion.”

Ten Hag defends Rashford trip

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s clash with Newcastle, Erik ten Hag defended Marcus Rashford for pulling out of England duty and travelling to New York.

“I think it’s positive that he was in a break,” said the Dutchman.

“I think Rashford, I think with Bruno, he was playing the most games of the whole squad and I think with Manchester United playing the most games across Europe and especially the internationals, our internationals are not mostly on the bench, mostly they are playing.

“Our players are playing the most games in this crazy season. They need a breather to collect energy.

“For me, it’s positive he took that time to turn off from football. I have seen him back this week and he has shown a lot of energy, a lot of motivation, it was a good spirit and a lot of focus.

“Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Bruno, Casemiro, they are starters for their nations.

“I want to emphasise they have the most games across the season so far. We played an extra round in the Europa League.”

Ten Hag also defends Weghorst

Another player Ten hag has shielded from criticism is Wout Weghorst.

The Netherlands international has bagged just twice since moving from Burnley in January.

But, when discussing a potential new role for Scott McTominay, he hailed his compatriot for the way he’s performed at Old Trafford so far.

“Scott can play in many roles, it’s clear he has scoring capabilities for Scotland but also this season for us he’s a really good finisher but I see him as a midfielder so I think I’m happy with Wout is doing,” he said.

“Because when Wout is in the team the team is performing better.”
