Greenwood further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill

Manchester United player Mason Greenwood will spend a third night in custody as Greater Manchester Police continue their investigation, with the footballer further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

The 20-year-old was initially arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday afternoon after a woman posted images and videos on social media showing incidents of physical violence allegedly caused by Greenwood.

Greater Manchester Police were granted additional time to question the England international on Monday and that has now been extended into Wednesday.

A statement from GMP on Tuesday evening read: ‘Detectives have been granted further additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

‘The suspect was detained in custody on Sunday (30 January) afternoon after we became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

‘He continues to be questioned after magistrates authorised an extension until tomorrow (Wednesday 2 February).

‘Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

‘Enquiries are ongoing and the victim continues to be offered specialist support.’

Greenwood has already been suspended by Manchester United ‘until further notice’ with his imagery removed from the club’s shop, while Nike and other brands have cut ties with the striker.

He has arranged for his own personal representation for questioning by the police, with Manchester United having opted against providing him legal counsel.

The forward made his debut for the club in 2019 after graduating from United’s academy, which he joined at the age of eight, and last year signed a new four-year contract worth £100,000-a-week.

He has one cap for England but has not been selected by Gareth Southgate since 2020 when he breached Covid regulations in Iceland to visit two women at a hotel along with teammate Phil Foden.
