Grealish ‘waited in tunnel’ to confront Southampton star over rough treatment

Southampton chief Ralph Hasenhuttl revealed that Jack Grealish waited to confront Oriel Romeu in the tunnel after the two clashed on the pitch during Manchester City's 1-1 draw with the Saints on Saturday night.

Kyle Walker-Peters fired Southampton into an early lead with a stunning solo strike before Aymeric Laporte headed home to secure a share of the spoils for the champions.

But it was Grealish and Romeu who caught the eye after the pair clashed through the first half.

The Saints midfielder clattered into City's £100million man – sparking an angry reaction from Grealish.

The England ace was led away by team-mates after shoving Romeu, but Husenhuttl revealed that bad blood didn't stop at the final whistle as the pair had words in the tunnel.

“I think they had a discussion with Oriol because Grealish was waiting for him in the tunnel because of a few things that happened outside on the pitch,” Hasenhuttl told Sky Sports after the game.

“It was not right but it is not [to be discussed] here for the cameras."

But despite talking up the clash, Hasenhuttl revealed that the pair had made amends after their on-field dramatics.

“They spoke about it, everything is good,” added the Saints chief.

Despite Laporte's late leveller, City missed out on the chance to open up an unprecedented 14-point lead at the top of the Premier League, although they do still remain 12 points clear of Liverpool.

The Reds, however, have two games in hand and could cut that lead to just six points if they can win them both.

City boss Pep Guardiola was keen to focus on the positives after the match and insisted that City produced "an exceptional performance" against Hasenhuttl's impressive side.

He told BBC's Match of the Day: "It was a good entertaining game and we make an exceptional performance.

"Before the goal we started well with good build-up, and the last 25 minutes of the first half and the whole of the second half was brilliant.

"We would love to score more and win but in the end we are happy with the performance."
