Graham Potter ‘in frame’ for Newcastle job after impressing new Saudi owners

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Graham Potter is reportedly in the frame for the Newcastle United job after impressing the club's new Saudi Arabian owners.

Potter's Brighton side have made a stunning start to the new season and currently sit in sixth place having lost just one of their first seven Premier League matches.

In addition, they have conceded just five goals so far to give them the league's second strongest defence and were unlucky not to win last weekend's 0-0 draw against Arsenal.

All this has helped to put Potter's name on the Newcastle owners' wanted list to replace the under pressure Steve Bruce, report The Sun.

Potter replaced Chris Hughton as manager at the American Express Stadium in 2019 following a season in charge of Swansea City in the Championship.

He has since guided Brighton to 15th and 16th place finishes in the top flight, while also altering the club's style of play into a more attractive brand of football.

Prior to managing Swansea, Potter took Swedish club Ostersunds from the fourth tier all the way to a Swedish Cup triumph and the knockout stages of the Europa League.

With his Brighton contract running until 2025, a considerable amount of compensation will likely be required to prize Potter away from the club, not that this will likely bother Newcastle, who are now the world's richest club.

The owners will also be impressed by Potter's record against the Magpies in his two seasons with Brighton, which has seen him yet to lose or even concede in four meetings.

During his first season, the two clubs played out a pair of goalless draws before Brighton secured 3-0 wins in both fixtures last season.

Potter's name has entered discussions after initial favourite Antonio Conte ruled himself out of the running for the role in favour of managing a club closer to challenging for trophies.

The Mirror report that other names being strongly considered to replace Bruce if he is sacked are former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca and current Rangers gaffer Steven Gerrard.
