Graeme Souness says he was proved ‘100% right’ on ‘average player’ Paul Pogba

Graeme Souness has proudly hit out at his critics after insisting that he was proved 100 per cent right over Paul Pogba.

The France international left Manchester United in the summer for Juventus after seven years at Old Trafford where he ultimately failed to live up to his £89million price tag. After joining from Juve in 2015 for a world-record fee, many believed that the midfielder could take the Red Devils back to the top.

That did not transpire, though, despite a handful of promising performances but a long list of disappointing displays. However, on his back from the get-go was ex- Liverpool midfielder Souness, who seemed to crucify the Frenchman on a weekly basis on Sky Sports.

After taking similar bites out of Jack Grealish over the past two years, Souness warned the Manchester City star that he should heed his words – because of his Pogba verdicts.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I don’t have a problem with Grealish, I don’t have a problem with anyone.

“I think he’s a good player, technically he’s fantastic, but being a really good technician is only a part of the game. I don’t believe we can be critical of the modern player.

“When I was having a go at Pogba, it was because it was Manchester United and my Liverpool connections, and I think I was the first one to call Pogba out as an average player in our league, and I think I was proven 100 per cent right at the end of the day."

Pogba's woes at United appear to have followed him to Juventus, where a fresh injury has threatened his status at the World Cup this winter. Last month, it was announced that the 29-year-old would undergo surgery on his knee.

It puts him in a race against time to be fit for Qatar competition, which is set to kick off in November.
