Graeme Souness opens door to BT Sport or BBC after Sky Sports exit

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp reviews the Spurs win

Graeme Souness has hinted that he could yet return to TV screens despite holding back the tears as he confirmed his exit from Sky Sports on Sunday. Speaking after analysing Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Tottenham, the Reds icon explained that it would be the final time he would provide punditry for the broadcaster.

Souness spent 15 years working at Sky Sports and was a regular for the programme’s high-profile fixtures, often providing a straight-talking edge and had no issue clashing with his colleagues in the studio. Alongside his television gig, Souness recently took up a position at talkSPORT alongside his Daily Mail column and recently hinted that he could yet return to screens.

“I have always been comfortable on live TV because it lights a fire under you,” Souness wrote. “It meant a lot that my last game for Sky was at Liverpool, the club I hold so dear. I will be 70 on Saturday and I’m still very much open for business.

“My passion for football is undimmed and I certainly still feel I have a lot to offer. My column is in the Daily Mail every Saturday and I look forward to sharing my views and passion for our game there, each week.”

Only Souness will know whether being “open for business” means that he is open to fielding offers from Sky Sports’ competitors, but he certainly has not ended speculation that a return is on the cards. The likes of BT Sport and the BBC will be on red-alert if Souness does wish to continue punditry, as he already works for ITV during cup and international games.

BT Sport are rebranding to TNT Sports for next season and would likely want a high-profile name such as Souness to help lead their coverage, while he could become one of few to work for both ITV and BBC if the Beeb do push to land the 69-year-old. Ian Wright works alongside Souness at ITV and is also a regular on Match of the Day at their rivals.

After a 22-year managerial career following his retirement from football, Souness has enjoyed a stellar career as a pundit and insisted that he owed many apologies in his speech announcing that his time at Sky Sports would be coming to an end.

He said: “I have to say, for me I decided that football management wasn’t for me any more. I had totally the wrong temperament for it and personality. I was given an opportunity to do this and it has been magnificent. It has just been the most fantastic time for me. I love football and I care for it and I worry about it going forward.

“But in Sky’s hands it’s in safe hands and I think over the years we have treated the Premier League with great detail and I think we look after football very well. For me personally I have got the buzz of live football, coming to some fantastic games and some fantastic stadiums and witnessing some great events.

“I think I owe a hundred apologies. I think people at home want to see us not always agree, but it has been great and I am amongst friends. Nothing goes on forever, I have got lots of things coming up. It has been great, so thank you to everyone.”
