Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s career has taken a turn for the worse after his side were completely outplayed by arch-rivals Manchester City on Saturday. The Citizens raced into a 2-0 lead at half-time after an own goal from Eric Bailly and a scrappy finish from Bernardo Silva were enough to earn the bragging rights on derby day.

United had just one shot on target – from Cristiano Ronaldo in the first-half – throughout the entire game as they struggled yet again under Solskjaer.

Recording just 32 per cent possession, this was arguably a more toothless performance than the one against Liverpool two weeks ago.

And with just two chances of any note throughout the entire game, United fans were not happy, with a chorus of boos ringing around the ground at full-time.

Yet it wasn’t so much the attacking output that angered supporters.

The defensive display was awful against City, with a wild own goal by Bailly almost repeated by Victor Lindelof, before a mix-up between Luke Shaw and David De Gea allowed Bernardo Silva to double the lead.

And Graeme Souness let his thoughts known on two more players for their poor efforts – in Bruno Fernandes and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The lack of pressing by the duo gave City’s Joao Cancelo more than enough space to cross for both the goals.

And Souness gave the pair a torrid time in the post-match analysis on Sky.

“You’d imagine the United bench shouting at Fernandes to stop the cross but he doesn’t,” Souness said on Sky Sports.

“He jogs out. Sprint to him, son, sprint to him!

“That is not professional football at the highest level. That is not the attitude to have in that. For the second goal it was the exact same.

Wan-Bissaka produced a poor display yet again against a top side who picked off United’s right-hand side for their goals.

And the result leaves United fifth in the table, where they could potentially slip to seventh by the end of the game week.
