Graeme Souness disagrees with fellow Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher that the England men’s manager must be English. Souness claimed there wouldn’t be such opinions if Sir Alex Ferguson was still in management and was keen on the job.
England boss Gareth Southgate has been mulling over his future following his side’s participation at the World Cup. The Three Lions lost to France at the quarter-final stage.
The Telegraph claims the 52-year-old is set to remain in the role but is yet to tell the FA of his decision. He still has a contract until after the European Championships in 2024, which would be his fourth major tournament in charge.
But if Southgate were to call it a day, Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite to replace him. German Thomas Tuchel and Northern Irishman Brendan Rodgers are also among the contenders.
Carragher would be against all three appointments. Earlier this week, he tweeted: “The England manager should always be English!”

But Souness has given his side of the debate. He says the best candidate for the job should be picked and nationality should not be the main deciding factor.
He wrote in the Daily Mail: “On the debate about whether England should or should not appoint a continental manager if Gareth Southgate doesn’t stay, I would say this: if Sir Alex Ferguson was 15 or 20 years younger and up for it, would the ‘English-only’ argument apply?
“Of course not. In an ideal world, it would be an Englishman managing England but you wouldn’t ignore a great candidate if one came up from somewhere else in the world.
“It would be the best man for the job. Are you really going to say ‘no’ to someone who’s got better credentials and is more likely to win you a trophy?

England men’s side have had just two foreign managers before. Carragher played under both Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
Capello has the best win percentage of any England manager, aside from Sam Allardyce’s one game in charge. However, he was unable to turn that success into progression deep at a major tournament.
Former Tottenham boss Pochettino refused to rule out managing England when asked by Sky Sports last month. He said: “Maybe the national team is a different job, but why not.
“If it’s not the next job, then maybe in the future. It’s not specific that all I want is Argentina. If another country, why not? For sure, that would be good also.”
