Graeme Souness destroys Micah Richards with Sergio Reguilon quip

Graeme Souness had a withering put-down for Micah Richards as the former Manchester City star tried to make a joke about Sergio Reguilon.

Tottenham left-back Reguilon was the subject of an intense debate between Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp last week.

While Keane criticised Reguilon and the majority of his Spurs teammates as "average", Redknapp claimed the Spaniard is "as good a left-back as there is in the country".

In response, Manchester United legend Keane said sarcastically: "That’s why (Real) Madrid let him go."

Richards attempted to reignite the debate with his fellow pundits on Sunday afternoon, but he ran into a scathing put-down at the hands of Souness.

Asked to give his verdict on Reguilon, Richards told Sky Sports: "Well I heard Roy's comments last week and I don't know if you've watched him or not.

"He's talking about Real Madrid – he's a top-quality full-back."

Keane responded by pointing out that Reguilon – who joined Spurs for £25million in the summer – spent last season on loan at Sevilla.

Richards replied: "Yeah he was on loan, he was on loan but he's still a good player. I went on loan to Fiorentina."

At that moment, Souness chimed in by saying: "Exactly!"

The former Liverpool midfielder's interjection sent the studio into hysterics and Richards acknowledged he set himself up for the put-down before adding: "But Reguilon, he's a good player."

Meanwhile, Reguilon reflected on the debate between Keane and Redknapp last week and said: "This is Roy Keane’s opinion but we have a lot of top-class players who can play in every team.

"We have the best players but thank you, Jamie, for defending me. It was so funny – he was really angry. I watched that and smiled a lot, it was very nice.”
