A Good Morning Britain reporter was slated by World Cup fans after controversially wearing a half-and-half England and Wales shirt ahead of the two nations’ clash on Tuesday. The ‘Battle of Britain’ final group stage clash will decide the fate of the two sides, as Gareth Southgate’s side need just a point to qualify for the knock-out stages.
Gareth Bale and co need to either win by four goals, or defeat England and hope for a draw between Iran and the USA. GMB reporter Jonathan Swain previewed the crunch game while wearing a half-and-half shirt live on TV. “Look, split personalities this morning,” Swain told the ITV show.
“Not my idea I have to say, but I think I am sort of half-qualified to wear this, I do actually have a mother who is from mid-Wales so it’s probably appropriate for me to wear this, this morning.”
Despite Swain’s insistence that there was some sense in him wearing the shirt, fans of the show were not pleased with its appearance. “Half and half shirts, get in the bin !! #GMB,” one fan tweeted. Another fan claimed it was “unforgivable” for Swain to don the kit: “Uniting Wales and England fans that half and half shirts are unforgivable.”
Football fans could not believe their eyes, as half-and-half scarves are somewhat common at games, and the equivalent for shirts are rarely spotted especially ahead of a game between two rivals. “Omg half and half shirt,” another fan wrote on social media. “What am I watching.”
Several viewers described Swain’s shirt as “embarrassing” but there were some positive comments, and the reporter was even asked where it could be purchased from. “We need that top here,” one fan admitted on Twitter. “My Husband is English and I’m Welsh. Our boys were born in Durham but we now live in wales!”

England boss Southgate explained the rivalry between the two countries in his pre-match press conference when a Brazilian journalist asked about the origin of the friction. “Quite simply, we live here and they live here,” Southgate bluntly responded.
“There is nothing more to say. These are two countries that live next to each other that have developed a great rivalry. But there is nothing more according to me, but I can understand that they feel things differently. The Welsh are guided by a surplus of motivation when they face us. I can understand it. You know, I live in Yorkshire and there they have the same [disdain] towards the rest of England… Here we are. It will be a magnificent atmosphere at the stadium on Tuesday.”
England and Wales meet at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium on Tuesday, with both sides vying for not just bragging rights, but also a place in the World Cup knock-out stages.
