Giroud admits he was "annoyed" with Mount before scoring for Chelsea
Olivier Giroud admits he was going to be "annoyed" with Mason Mount had his winning goal been disallowed against Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea saw off the La Liga leaders 1-0 in the Champions League courtesy of the forward's acrobatic strike.
Giroud found the back of the net, but the flag initially went up for offside.
A lengthy VAR check ensued before an Atletico defender was deemed to have touched the ball last making Giroud onside.
Prior to that though Marcos Alonso's cross was heading for the Frenchman.
Mount nicked in and tried to take possession seconds before the Chelsea frontman scored.
Giroud admitted after the contest though that, had his goal been chalked off, he would've been less than impressed with his team-mate.
"I was a bit lucky, the defender didn’t really go for it, I was a bit ahead," he told RMC Sport.
"I said to Mason I am going to be annoyed with him if they don’t award me the goal because he touched the ball just before [from Marcos Alonso’s cross] when I could have had it and finished if he left it for me.
"But I am not going to complain. I am happy to see the ball in the back of the net and above all that there is no offside."
Chelsea will host Atletico on March 17 in the second-leg as they aim to reach the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2014.
Thomas Tuchel is now unbeaten in his first eight games as boss across all competitions.
The German praised the discipline of his side in Bucharest knowing all too well how dangerous Atletico were on the break.
"Fantastic result, fantastic goal. Well deserved," he told BT Sport.
"We wanted to dominate in the opponents' half, to never lose concentration, not to do any easy mistakes and always be aware of quick counter-attacks for all their quality.
"It was a very disciplined performance – a deserved shut-out. This is the hard work, a team effort – the basis for a big win."
