Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s appointment as Rangers boss on Thursday evening means that the managerial void left by Steven Gerrard has been filled relatively quickly. Yet following Gerrard’s move to Aston Villa last week, Rangers fans will look at former comments by Van Bronckhorst and fear he too may leave for the Premier League should a chance occur.

Van Bronckhorst was appointed as Rangers boss exactly a week after Gerrard’s departure, with the Dutchman having managed Feyenoord and Chinese side Guangzhou R+F previously.

Bringing Feyenoord their first Eredivisie title since 1998-99 in his time at the helm, the 46-year old is well versed in winning silverware.

With Rangers having won their first league title since 2012 last season, there is an expectation to do the same again in the current campaign given their four-point lead over arch-rivals Celtic at the moment.

But given Gerrard’s move to the riches of the Premier League, there is a fear Van Bronckhorst may do the same in the future should he succeed at Ibrox.

And old comments have surfaced that could indicate Van Bronckhorst will do the same.

“As a player, I had dreams and as a coach I have the same. Every coach wants to be involved in the big competitions,” he told talkSPORT in 2018.

“My ambitions are clear, but I also know that in football you can have ambitions but you never know how your career will proceed.

“For me, it doesn’t change the way I work and how I see my future. I just enjoy the day and work hard for tomorrow and we will see what happens.”

When pressed, Van Bronckhorst admitted he would be tempted by working for another of his old teams in Arsenal.

He added: “It is (a dream). I always say if I get one of the clubs I had abroad it would be really nice, but as a football player you have a career, you sign a contract and as a coach you also know that you are successful today and tomorrow you can be fired.

Van Bronckhorst played for Rangers from 1998-2001 under the guidance of Dick Advocaat, before signing for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal where he won a Premier League and FA Cup.

His successes at Highbury caught the attention of Barcelona where he won the La Liga title and a UEFA Champions League.

But he has credited his time at Rangers as being the springboard to his career, stating he can’t wait to get back to work at Ibrox.

“I am absolutely delighted to be returning to Rangers as the club’s new manager,” he said as the news was confirmed.

“I feel so lucky to be going to work with a squad which is in a great position on all fronts and largely has that experience of being winners.

“I look forward to carrying on and enhancing the work that has been done already alongside Ross Wilson and the board of the club, and I’m grateful for the chance to work again at this huge football club.

“I cannot wait to meet the club’s incredible supporters again and begin this new era for us all.”
