Ryan Giggs sent his ex-girlfriend snaps of a sex paddle and handcuffs after she sustained a bruise from "rough sex" that they "enjoyed a lot", a court heard.

The ex-Manchester United winger, 48, is accused of intimidating, threatening and physically assaulting 36-year-old Kate Greville during their relationship between 2017 and 2020, which he has denied.

His barrister, Christopher Daw QC, is cross-examining Ms Greville today (August 10) on the third day of the 10-day trial.

Mr Daw questioned her about the bruising which she received in an alleged assault in Dubai. Ms Greville had told her business partner Elsa Roodt about the bruise at the time, explaining it was from rough sex she and Giggs had.

She said she had lied because she was "embarrassed and didn’t want to admit" she'd been assaulted. The court heard Ms Greville had also messaged Giggs saying: "My sex bruise is coming out nice too."

When quizzed about that, she said she told Giggs that Ms Roodt thought it was caused by sex as a cover-up. Mr Daw replied: "That’s a complete lie isn't it, it was bruise caused by rough sex, the kind of which you both enjoyed a lot."

Ms Greville said: “No.”

The court heard Ms Greville had later messaged Giggs: "I want you so bad – rough." He replied that he was "scared of hurting her" before sending her a picture of a sex paddle in an Agent Provocateur box and a pair of handcuffs, the court heard.

That allegedly prompted Ms Greville to write: "Oh my God, that's brilliant." She explained in court that they never used the paddle and was joking with Giggs about the sex bruise to "make light of it".

The court also heard that Ms Greville had referred to herself as a "slave to his every need and demand" as Giggs had taken advantage of the "vulnerable position" she was in following her split with her ex-husband.

She broke down in tears when Mr Daw claimed she was telling a "complete pack of lies", which she denied.

Mr Daw refers to the following phone conversation between Mr Giggs and Ms Greville over messages.

Ms Greville messaged: “I want you, rough.”

Mr Giggs messaged: “Do you, I’m scared of hurting you."

Ms Greville messaged: “I want it to hurt, not in a weird way. I want you to surprise and shock me.”

Mr Giggs messaged: “It’s a fine line.”

Ms Greville messaged: “Well we’ll just have to have fun finding that line then.”

Mr Giggs sent a picture of a paddle from Agent Provocateur.

Ms Greville messaged: “What is that?”

Mr Giggs messaged: “You asked me to be a bit more assertive.”

Ms Greville messaged: “When are we using this?”

Mr Giggs messaged: “After I use these badboys (handcuffs)."

Ms Greville said: “They’re amazing… Oh my god this is brilliant.”

Questioning the witness, Mr Daw said: “You’re saying you didn’t receive any kind of bruise from sex.

Ms Greville said: “I said not that I recall. We never used that paddle, not once.”

Mr Daw said: “The sex bruise was a joke, not a rouse. It was something you were taking pleasure in.”

Ms Greville said: “I was joking about it being a sex bruise, I was making light of telling Elsa it was a sex bruise which was wrong.”

The trial continues.
