Gerard Pique gives ‘the best answer’ to Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo debate

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has given his verdict on the never-ending Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate with a brilliant response.

The 34-year-old has had the rare opportunity to play alongside both superstars, who are widely regarded the best players of all time.

Pique was initially in the same Champions League-winning Manchester United side as Ronaldo before joining childhood friend Messi at Barcelona, where they spent over a decade winning trophies together.

And the Spanish veteran gave a diplomatic response when quizzed on which player was better, highlighting Ronaldo’s height and physicality while giving Messi’s ball control and dribbling skill the edge.

Pique told BT Sport via The Mirror: "I think that they are both amazing.

"We are talking about two of the best players, not just in the world but the history of this sport.

"I always said that Messi has some talent that no one has. I mean, he has the ball and his speed controlling the ball.

"The ball doesn't go two metres far from his foot, it's always there. It's impossible to catch him, this talent I didn't see from anyone.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is such a different player, they are very different. He is tall, strong, he's really complete. He can do anything.

"He can do goals with the head, free-kicks, penalties, take one on one."

In the end, though, Pique chose his close friend and record seven-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi.

He added: "But for me it's like Messi is not human but Cristiano is the best of the humans."

Messi’s ability to combine his mind-blowing playmaking skills with a staggering number of goals has often seen him be regarded as the more “naturally” gifted player and therefore “alien”.

Messi has 44 less career goals but nearly 100 more assists in around 150 less appearances than Ronaldo throughout his career, demonstrating his otherworldly talent.
