Gennaro Gattuso hit out at Tottenham in private texts to Napoli star
Napoli striker Lorenzo Insigne has revealed that his former boss Gennaro Gattuso has explained to him that Tottenham Hotspur are in "a bit of mess".
The duo worked together for a year and a half while Gattuso enjoyed a spell as Napoli manager and have remained close since the former A.C. Milan midfielder's departure from the Stadio San Paolo.
In the wake of Paulo Fonseca's deal to become Tottenham boss falling through, Gattuso was odds-on to take over the role in North London, before he met the same fate after fans voiced their disapproval over the idea.
Gattuso is highly thought of by Spurs' newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici, but the hunt for Jose Mourinho's replacement goes on, more than two months after he was dismissed from his post.
Explaining the situation to Football Italia, Insigne revealed: "We've texted each other, he told me there was a bit of mess.
"But now I am focused on the Euros, while he's on holiday so I am not going to ask him such questions."
Spurs' decision to sack Mourinho was criticised for its bizarre timing, less than a week before the Carabao Cup final against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, a manager Mourinho has enjoyed great success against.
Former Tottenham player Ryan Mason was handed the reigns on an interim basis until the end of the season, but since then a number of other high profile candidates have been approached over the vacancy.
Antonio Conte came very close to being appointed before most recently former Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui, who declined in favour of remaining at Sevilla.
Ex-Wolves manager Nuno Santo is the latest bookmakers favourite to lead Spurs out for the opening day of next season.
Gattuso would have been a particularly baffling appointment given his recent turbulent stint at Fiorentina, where he left after just 23 days.
The Italian lasted just over three weeks after a dispute over player recruitment this summer made his post untenable.
