Gary Neville warns "no way" Newcastle will reach Champions League next season
Gary Neville has dismissed any hopes of Newcastle United securing a top four finish next season.
Newcastle have undergone a massive change over the course of the season since appointing Eddie Howe last November. The former Bournemouth manager was given £80million by the club’s new Saudi-led ownership to splash on five new players in January.
And the consequences have been huge, with the Magpies achieving their short-term goal of avoiding Premier League relegation this campaign. But Neville believes they must be realistic in their aims for next season and has rubbished the idea that they’ll be able to compete with Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United for a Champions League place.
The Sky Sports pundit said ahead of their clash with Arsenal: “They’ve got massive ambition and there’s no way they’re going to get into the Champions League next season but they can be Wolves, West Ham and challenge. That’s where they need to get to and challenge that sort of zone.
“Once they get there then they can look at above. It’s an incredible job from Eddie Howe. And to be fair for Arsenal tonight, it’s one of the toughest they could have – Liverpool beat them last time out but each game before that they’ve won.”

Newcastle are expected to spend heavily again in the summer in the next phase of their plan to become one of England’s top sides.
The club hierarchy has already bolstered Howe’s squad by adding Kieran Trippier (£12m), Chris Wood (£25m), Bruno Guimaraes (£33.3m plus £6.5m in add-ons), Dan Burn (£11m plus £2m in add-ons) and Matt Targett (loan deal) in what is only believed to be the beginning of the project.
They currently sit 14th in the Premier League – a far cry from the Champions League places but considerably more promising than the relegation finish which could well have occurred this season.
