Manchester United legend Gary Neville has given his thoughts on how his old team should operate in this coming transfer window, calling on them to spend wisely.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer has enjoyed a stellar season in the Old Trafford hot-seat, guiding the Red Devils to the Europa League final as well as Champions League qualification via top-four finish in the league.

United have been linked with a number of big names ahead of what is sure to be an active window for their rivals, but Neville has claimed that the 13-time Premier League winners could look "incredibly smart" but acquiring just one of their targets.

He explained: "I think if you look at the policy over the last couple of years since Ole has come in at Manchester United, I don’t think they will sign another striker.

"I haven’t got the contacts on the inside that I used to have, so it’s my assumption, because they’ve been desperate for Sancho.

"You look at their recruitment last summer, they didn’t get Sancho and they were criticised for that. I criticised them for that.

"But they could look incredibly smart this year if they get him nearer half the price and they’ve waited 12 months."

United have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund star a number of times over the course of the last few transfer windows, but given his contract with the Bundesliga side edging ever closer to expiration – the Red Devils could pounce, getting their man for significantly cheaper than first anticipated.

Neville continued: "I’m just looking at it now and I’m thinking Sancho comes in, and I think Sancho would play on that right hand side. You’ve potentially got the back-up of Greenwood on that side.

"If you sign Kane or Halaand as well, which is what’s being mooted, I don’t think that works for Manchester United the way in which they’ve recruited in the last few years.

"Allowing Greenwood to emerge, making sure Rashford plays, Van de Beek can’t get a game. I think it’s Sancho and I think that’s there business done.”
