Gary Neville tells Harry Maguire to seek out help from a psychologist
Gary Neville suggests Harry Maguire see a psychologist to deal with confidence issues ahead of the World Cup this winter… but insists the Manchester United defender HAS to play for England in Qatar
- Harry Maguire has been struggling at club and international level recently
- He has received criticism from fans and seems to be having confidence issues
- Gary Neville feels Maguire could benefit from speaking to a psychologist
- Despite his current issues, Neville thinks Maguire should go to the World Cup
Gary Neville has advised Harry Maguire to seek out help from a psychologist to help him return to his best form.
Maguire has endured a difficult period at club level which has seen him dropped from the Manchester United starting XI by Erik ten Hag, and he had a night to forget on Monday for England when he conceded a penalty after giving the ball away in the first place against Germany.
Neville has spoken of going through tough times himself when he was a player, and explained that he spoke to a psychologist which allowed him to come through those setbacks. He thinks Maguire could also benefit from getting some professional help.

Maguire had a difficult game against Germany on Monday which saw him concede a penalty
‘I’ve been there myself. I gave away two really bad goals against Vasco de Gama in a World Club Championships in early 2000s, then six months later went onto have a horrible tournament for England in Belgium and Holland,’ Neville said on Nihal Arthanayake’s BBC Radio 5 Live programme on Tuesday.
‘My pain lasted for about eight months in football terms. I was poor, lost my confidence, didn’t want the ball and didn’t show for things.
‘When I lost my confidence, I went and saw a psychologist to help me through those moments.
‘I would suggest he does what I did. I did go and see my doctor at Manchester United. I did go and get a psychologist and get help. You do need external help at times.’
As well as conceding a penalty at Wembley, Maguire was also caught on the ball in the build-up to Germany’s second goal, and there were audible boos for the United centre-back before and during the game.
Neville has admitted that he has some sympathy for Maguire, and has insisted that it is only a matter of time before he starts to perform well again.
‘Harry is going through a difficult moment. I felt for him last night. But he’s a good solid character, he’s got a good family and people around him at Manchester United who will try and help him,’ Neville added.
Gareth Southgate may now have a tough decision to make over Maguire’s place in the team
However, Neville has urged Southgate to stand by Maguire and pick him for the World Cup
‘It’s a tough period for Harry, there’s no getting away from that. But there’s nothing you can do other than show up, try your best and not give in. At some point, his form will return because he has been an excellent player for United at times and England.’
After his latest outing, there have been some calls for Maguire to be dropped from Gareth Southgate’s squad ahead of the World Cup in November.
However, Neville does not agree with this view, and is adamant that the 29-year-old is worthy of a spot on the plane to Qatar.
Neville continued: ‘He has to go to the World Cup. England haven’t got a massive pool of centre-backs for a start.
‘Harry’s done very well for England and Gareth Southgate. Harry’s not got a lot of competition for those two or three centre-back spaces.’
