Gary Neville has highlighted the moment when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United side went against his tactics in the draw with West Brom. The Red Devils were held to a point by Sam Allardyce’s men, in a blow to their Premier League title aspirations.
The Baggies took a shock lead after just 83 seconds when Mbaye Diagne outmuscled Victor Lindelof to head in Conor Gallagher’s cross.
United found it difficult to break down their struggling hosts, but Bruno Fernandes hooked Luke Shaw’s cross into the top corner at the end of the first half to claim a point.
The visitors had chances to claim three points after the break, while Albion also could have won late on, but Diagne struck his effort over the crossbar from six yards out.
Solskjaer’s side have been struck by costly defensive errors in recent weeks, with Lindelof’s misjudgement of Gallagher’s cross coming a week after a Harry Maguire mistake saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin score an injury-time equaliser for Everton.

Speaking before the game, Solskjaer revealed he had issued new instructions to his defence, in an effort to cut out the mistakes.
“You can’t give any team any chance to get the ball in your box,” he told Sky Sports.
“If there’s one thing you know about West Brom and Sam, he’s going to challenge us, he’s going to put us under pressure.
“Stay higher maybe, be braver, put our bodies on the line. But we’re here to do a job. We know it’s not going to be an enjoyable, fun one. We need to do a professional job.”

But the United defence appeared to completely ignore their manager’s instructions when Gallagher crossed in for Diagne’s goal.
Sky Sports commentator Neville picked up on United apparently not following Solskjaer’s tactics.
“I watched Ole Gunnar Solskjaer talk about his defenders pushing up the pitch in his pre-match interview, well that was exactly the opposite,” Neville said while commentating for Sky Sports.
“West Brom were always going to put pressure on the United defence and put the ball into the box as early as possible.
“They don’t shift, Lindelof, Maguire, I said it two or three weeks ago, if you don’t shift the two or three yards when the ball goes back then you’re going to end up on top of your goalkeeper.
“It’s a brilliant ball in, Diagne attacks it really well and he mauls Lindelof and heads it brilliantly past De Gea.”
The latest error heaps further pressure on United’s embattled defenders, with the Red Devils reportedly set to sign a new centre-back when the summer transfer window opens.
The draw at the Hawthorns means United are now eight points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, having played a game more than their rivals.
