Bruno Fernandes missed a crucial penalty in the final moments of the game against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday, and issued an apology as Manchester United went on to lose the game 1-0. However Gary Neville has called it “embarrassing”.
Gary Neville has reacted angrily to the “embarrassing” apology that Bruno Fernandes issued following his penalty miss at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Aston Villa stunned Manchester United as a late Kortney Hause header turned out to be the winner at Old Trafford, but Fernandes had the chance to salvage a point after the hosts were awarded a penalty deep into injury time.
There has been a lot of speculation over who would take United’s penalties this season after Cristiano Ronaldo re-signed for the club, but Fernandes stepped up and uncharacteristically fired well over the bar to hand Villa three points.
The midfielder apologised following the final whistle, but former United star Neville has said that situation is “embarrassing”.

Penalty misses happen, and in Fernandes’ case it was only the second time he hadn’t scored from the spot during his United career, but it was one of the weekend’s biggest talking points which led to an apology.
Fernandes took to Instagram to say: “Nobody is more frustrated and disappointed than me for missing the penalty and the consequent defeat.
“I’ve always assumed my responsibilities and I’ve always embraced them under pressure in moments like this. Today, I failed. I will come back stronger for me, because these are the standards I hold myself to, but most of all for my teammates and our fans who have always supported us.”
Neville was asked on Twitter for his views on the apology and the former United captain slammed the midfielder’s PR team, and revealed that he will be speaking about the issue while fulfilling his punditry duties on Sky Sports.

Neville tweeted: “It’s embarrassing! They need to sack their PR people, speak with some authenticity and get on with it. I’m going to go big on this in the next few weeks. They’ve all got these comms managers, that are creating personalities that don’t exist!”
It was a disappointing performance from a United perspective, who have had suffered a dip in form following the exhilarating 4-1 victory over Newcastle United as Ronaldo made his second debut at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost their Champions League opener 2-1 against Young Boys in Switzerland, and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at home to West Ham, before losing to Villa at Old Trafford again on Saturday.
Fernandes wasn’t the only player to receive heavy criticism, as Mason Greenwood was slated by fans for being “greedy” and not passing to Ronaldo throughout the game.
It’s been a bad week at the office for United, and Fernandes’ penalty miss summed up their recent performances perfectly, but that’s the nature of football and it’s becoming expected that players should apologise for when they make mistakes during games.
Neville believes that it’s poor PR, as their social media teams try to promote their image and make the stars appear more in touch with the fans by “creating personalities that don’t exist”.
It’ll certainly be an interesting take on what Neville has to say in more detail should he bring this attention to air, and with the drama circulating on the day of his popular show Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher, we may not have to wait long.
It’ll also be interesting to see who steps up for United’s next penalty, as Fernandes will be eager to make amends for Saturday’s miss, but Ronaldo could take matters into his own hands.
