Gary Neville says Man Utd star is 'doing nothing' after Liverpool thrashing
Gary Neville says Manchester United captain Harry Maguire is ‘nowhere near it’ and ‘doing nothing’ after struggling in the embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils suffered one of their worst defeats in living memory on Sunday, with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool going 4-0 up at half-time and piling the pressure on under-fire manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Maguire struggled in last weekend’s 4-2 defeat to Leicester City following his injury lay-off and it was another difficult afternoon for the England defender, who found himself out of position for Naby Keita’s opener and bumped into team-mate Luke Shaw in the build up to Diogo Jota’s second.
Maguire and Shaw both reacted slowly to allow Mohamed Salah to add a third for Liverpool, and the former lost a tackle before Salah made it 4-0 at half-time.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester United’s demoralising defeat, Neville said: ‘Harry Maguire’s not doing anything, he’s not doing anything at the moment.
‘That interview was an interview of a man who’s nowhere near his best himself. I said last week he shouldn’t have played, he’s nowhere near it out there.
‘He’s got to get himself fit and get his own performance right.’
Maguire apologised to Manchester United’s fans after the 5-0 capitulation and admitted he would be ‘looking in the mirror’ as his performance was ‘nowhere near good enough’.
‘We apologise to the fans, it was nowhere near good enough for this club,’ Maguire said. ‘They stuck with us right to the end and we appreciate that but as a club we have to do better.
‘I am so disappointed, we gave them so many chances. They were so clinical, we had a lot of chances ourselves but I am a defender and to concede four in the first half especially at Old Trafford is nowhere near good enough.
‘As a player I know myself. I’ll be looking at myself and my individual performance.
‘We have to stick together, there is no point blaming each other but look at ourselves. Look in the mirror when we go home tonight and think where we can do better.
‘To lose to Liverpool in any game of football hurts. The rivals, the way we lost the game, to be 4-0 down at half time in front of our fans, like I say it is not good enough.’
Manchester United’s defeat leaves them seventh in the Premier League, eight points behind leaders Chelsea, while Liverpool move back up to second.
