Manchester United should have appointed Antonio Conte to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer instead of Erik ten Hag, according to former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan, who has also questioned Gary Neville’s view that the Tottenham boss would not succeed at Old Trafford. Ten Hag has endured a baptism of fire during his short time in charge of United, with the Dutchman having failed to take a single point from the club’s first two Premier League matches.

United’s slow start leaves them at the very bottom of the table ahead of next week’s crunch meeting with Liverpool, in which Ten Hag will come up against one of the division’s biggest hitters for the very first time in a competitive match since joining United. Jordan believes that the Red Devils made a huge mistake by failing to snap up Conte instead of Ten Hag after Solskjaer was sacked in November of last year, though.

“Everybody knows that if Conte had gone to United they would liven up,” Jordan told talkSPORT when quizzed on United’s current predicament.

“There’s no two ways about it, but Neville was talking about: ‘Oh, here we go, we don’t want Conte in here, he comes in, he’s only here for a couple of years and he breaks up football clubs’.

“If you haven’t got the here and now, you haven’t got a future either. Conte would have been in the door, and my God, they would be alive now. And that’s [Neville] the town cryer, the one that people have been listening to.”

Conte has worked wonders at Tottenham since taking over in north London at the end of last year, with the Italian coach securing Champions League qualification on the final day of last season before leading a large-scale recruitment drive to improve his squad over the course of this summer. However, Neville doubled down on his stance against having Conte at United on Monday by insisting that the 53-year-old is still not the right man for the job.

“I watched that second half yesterday [for Tottenham against Chelsea], I don’t think that’s a Manchester United manager,” Neville told Sky Sports about Conte’s suitability to manage the Red Devils.

“We had Jose [Mourinho] at the club and Jose did a brilliant job. You look back now, finishing second, winning trophies, but it didn’t work in the end and I just don’t think it would at Manchester United for Conte.

“But he’s a brilliant manager and I love him to bits. I’m glad he’s in our league but not the right fit for the club.”
