Gary Neville made a ruthless assessment of Tottenham after watching their 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Chelsea on Sunday, claiming that one player in particular “will never be appreciated”.

Tanguy Ndombele signed for Spurs two seasons ago, and after an initially strong start to life in north London, faded away.

Signing for Spurs for a club-record fee worth around £60million, Ndombele still holds that accolade today.

However, with the Frenchman flattering to deceive a lot of the time, Spurs fans have started to question whether he was worth the money.

Neville weighed in with his thought’s following Tottenham’s 3-0 loss at home to London rivals Chelsea on Sunday.

And the former Manchester United defender has praised the Frenchman’s qualities, calling him fantastic but under-appreciated.

“I don’t know what you make of him,” Neville said on Sky Sports.

“I don’t think anybody does. He’s one of those players that you watch and you think he’s a fantastic, technical football player.

“He takes the ball in difficult situations, he dribbles with it, he beats people.

“And then you sort of don’t see him then for maybe four minutes, six minutes, eight minutes and wonder where he is.”

That was almost certainly the case on Sunday as the Spurs midfield went missing before Chelsea ran riot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Neville hasn’t doubted his technique but believes Ndombele would be better suited in a league in which he has greater freedom to play his own game.

He added: “I watch Ndombele and think there’s a lot of players like him in Spain, in Italy. Sometimes they fit those leagues better.

“I don’t think he’ll ever be appreciated fully over here because he doesn’t fit into a position or a type.”

Spurs have lost 3-0 twice in succession in the Premier League at the hands of Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

And they will hope to avoid an unwanted hat-trick of 3-0 defeats when they take on another London rival this weekend in the form of Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
