Gary Neville explains to Man Utd fans why he's not calling out Solskjaer
Gary Neville says he won’t call for his former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked but the pressure is building on the Manchester United boss.
The Red Devils suffered their second league defeat of the campaign against Leicester on Saturday as they ran out 4-2 losers at the King Power Stadium to leave them sixth in the table.
Once again it was a performance well below par and even the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t rescue his side and spare Solskjaer’s blushes.
Former United defender Neville has been honest in his assessment of the club’s matches so far this term, making it clear performances need to improve.
But he’s stopped short of saying it’s time for his former club to sack the 48-year-old.
‘I have Manchester United fans on my social media saying you won’t call him out because he’s your mate,’ Neville said on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
‘No I won’t. I won’t call out any manager and ask for them to be sacked.
‘He’s my former team-mate and I actually like him a lot, Manchester United have failed with two managers who are perceived as world class.
‘The pressure is building though, what a collection of players, he has to get them to perform.’
With Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane being signed in the summer, many feel Solskjaer has now made enough signings to be challenging for silverware.
Solskjaer faces a difficult run of fixtures in the coming weeks with Champions League group games and the visit of Liverpool in the league on Sunday.
And Neville feels if Solskjaer can win a trophy and achieve a top-four finish then the club are still heading in the right direction under his leadership.
‘He should be under massive pressure because he’s been there for two years, 100 per cent,’ added Neville.
‘I think you give him until the end of the season.
‘I disagree with Jamie [Carragher], if you win a trophy and finish in the top four, that is progress.’
