Gary Neville "disappointed" Lingard didnt leave Man Utd before window shut
Gary Neville believes Jesse Lingard should have left Manchester United this summer and is "disappointed" the 28-year-old didn't seek a move away from the club having shown promise whilst on loan at West Ham.
The 28-year-old netted nine goals in 16 Premier League matches for the Hammers after arriving on loan in January and was heavily touted with a move back to the London Stadium.
West Ham manager David Moyes was keen on securing a permanent deal for Lingard but instead opted for Czech international Alex Kral on Transfer Deadline Day.
The Englishman was not considering a move elsewhere and wanted to stay at Old Trafford and fight for this place in the starting line-up.
But Neville believes at 28 Lingard needs to be playing regularly – especially if he wants to be included in England's World Cup squad in 2022.
The Sky Sports pundit is fearful he's made the wrong decision:
"I would actually have thought that a couple more players at Manchester United [would have left]. I’m disappointed for Jesse Lingard that he’s not left Manchester United," said Neville speaking to the Sky Sports cameras.
"He’ll get a few games, he’ll get moments on the pitch, he’ll contribute, but I think he had something going at West Ham last year that meant Jesse Lingard in his own right was standing up as a really good player."
Should Jesse Lingard have signed for West Ham this summer? Let us know in the comments section.
Following the arrivals of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton, United have serious strength in depth.
It means Lingard will have to make the most of the limited opportunities he is given throughout the season which are most likely to be in the early rounds of the Carabao and FA Cup.
Neville believes Lingard should have taken inspiration from wideman Dan James and followed the Welshman out the exit door at Old Trafford for the benefit of his career:

"To go back to being a squad player again I think, for me, is disappointing. I think you sometimes have to sort of fly the nest and go. I thought he’d already done that with what he did last year.
"So I think there’s two or three players that won’t get a lot of game time this year that could have joined Dan James and really furthered their careers and got more football."
