Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher slam Chelsea's recruitment failure

‘It’s UNBELIEVABLE’: Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher slam Chelsea’s failure to recruit a world class striker despite their £566m spend as Blues draw another blank despite creating plenty of chances in goalless draw with Liverpool

  • Chelsea’s failure to sign a leading centre forward last summer has been slammed
  • The Blues spent heavily but are without a reliable goalscorer leading the line
  • Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville criticised the club’s absence of a striker

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have bemoaned Chelsea’s lack of having an out-and-out centre forward following their uninspiring 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday evening.

Chelsea supporters at Stamford Bridge watched as their side familiarly created plenty of goalscoring opportunities but failed to convert a single one of them into a goal.

Kai Havertz and Reece James both had the ball in the back of the Liverpool net on separate occasions but saw their strikes agonisingly chalked off following VARs intervention.

Chelsea have spent nearly £600m since last summer as new owner Todd Boehly sought to fuel a new era of success with a bountiful injection of cash and new talent, but have had to rely on German playmaker Havertz up-front.

Chelsea recruited heavily in the summer but didn’t sign a world class striker to guarantee goals

Carragher blasted the decision to spend so heavily without recruiting a world class goalscorer, stating: ‘They had so many chances, how do they spend £600m but still not have a striker, unbelievable.

‘It was a good performance against Liverpool and should win 2-0 with all the chances they had,’ he added.

Chelsea had one less shot on target (3) than Liverpool at Stamford Bridge but had the best opportunties in front of goal, especially in the first-half.

Midfielder Kovacic blasted his close-range effort into the stands after putting too much power behind his shot when in the box, while Havertz handballed his effort that ended up in the back of the net.

Chelsea’s only recognised striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was snubbed from the club’s matchday squad that was the first named since Graham Potter was sacked as head coach on Sunday.

Co-commentator Gary Neville agreed that Chelsea has been the more impressive outfit but quipped that they had no one in the team to ‘score goals’,

‘Chelsea were by far the better team. But it’s a well told story that they are struggling badly and don’t have a centre-forward,’ said Neville.

‘No centre forward with all the investment and no one who believes it is their job to score a goal.

‘They have players who are happy to score a goal but just not that feeling they break their necks to get across the goalkeeper and get a goal.

‘Liverpool well below their best, off the back of City defeat, they will be happier with the point. Chelsea will just be frustrated,’ he added.
