Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer accidentally reveal FA Cup top TV picks with the Match of the Day host jokingly urging the BBC to avoid showing Newcastle vs Sunderland ‘because it’s very cold up north’

Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have accidentally revealed their top TV picks for the third round of the FA Cup. 

The draw for the next round of the competition took place on Sunday and some mouthwatering fixtures were announced, with Liverpool set to face off in a huge clash against Arsenal, while Newcastle will play rivals Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby. 

But with the BBC and ITV set to share the pick of the games, Lineker and Shearer have spoken on their picks for the match the Match of the Day hosts want to cover.  

‘Did you catch the draw that took place earlier?’, Lineker said to Shearer on their podcast, The Rest is Football podcast. 

‘Sunderland vs Newcastle! It’s been a while since one of those,’ he added.

The round boasts two mouthwatering ties, with Shearer’s former club Newcastle set to take on rivals Sunderland

The last time the two sides met in the tournament was in 1956, with Sunderland winning 2-0

The last time the two teams met was in the Premier League in 2016 where the Northumberland rivals played out a 1-1 draw. 

In the FA Cup, Newcastle and Sunderland have not been drawn against each other in 67 years, with their most recent meeting coming back in 1956, where Sunderland claimed a 2-0 victory against their rivals at St James’ Park.

And former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer admitted he’d be booking the day off to watch the match which is set to be held at the Stadium of Light. 

‘I’ve already sent the text message off asking for tickets!’ Shearer said.

‘What a draw it was, brilliant. Arsenal vs Liverpool and Sunderland vs Newcastle – amazing! Can’t wait. Something to look forward too.’

Lineker responded: ‘We’ll be doing one of those games, because we obviously alternate with picks with ITV.’

But Shearer hit back, claiming that it would be better to cover the Tyne-Wear derby, joking that Arsenal and Newcastle will play their reserve sides. 

‘I’ve already been on to the top guys about that Gary, we know Arsenal and Liverpool are going to play reserve sides we might as well do Sunderland and Newcastle where we know that no one can really afford to be beaten and won’t put reserve sides out,’ the Newcastle-born television pundit said. 

Arsenal and Liverpool last faced each other in 2014 in the FA Cup, with the Gunners claiming a 2-1 victory over the Merseyside outfit, the 17th time the pair have met in the tournament. 

Yet the BBC pundits debated whether they should be showing the other huge clash that will see Liverpool go head-to-head with Arsenal

 Shearer said that the BBC should chose to broadcast Newcastle vs Sunderland because ‘we know that no one can really afford to be beaten and won’t put reserve sides out’

But Lineker jokingly disagreed with Shearer, jesting with the former Newcastle man, saying: ‘No I’ve told them we should do Arsenal vs Liverpool because it’s very cold up north.’

‘Oh f*** off, we don’t want that,’ Shearer replied in jest. 

‘No I haven’t, don’t worry,’ Lineker replied. 

Elsewhere, Ange Postecoglou’s side will welcome Burnley to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Everton will travel to Crystal Palace and Brentford go up against Wolves. 

Man City will play Huddersfield Town, while Man United travel to Wigan. Chelsea are set to host Preston North End. 

Newcastle, meanwhile, moved up to sixth in the Premier League this weekend after their 1-0 win against Manchester United. 

It was a big win for Eddie Howe’s side, who undid the heartache of their disappointing draw to Paris Saint-Germain in midweek, with Anthony Gordon’s second half goal proving the difference for the Magpies.

‘I was slightly concerned again with all the injuries that Newcastle had. I was thinking can they go out again and perform again after being magnificent but being robbed like they were in Paris,’ Shearer added, speaking on Saturday’s victory. 

Eddie Howe’s side moved to sixth in the Premier League table this weekend after defeating Man United 1-0 at St James’ Park

But they suffered another injury setback, with Nick Pope seeming to dislocate his shoulder

‘To come back from that huge disappointment. I was thinking can they step up again? 

‘But the energy and the attitude and everything else that they showed from the very first minute, they put Man United under pressure and went after them. 

‘And Man United just couldn’t handle it. And I thought from the very first minute to the last minute that we were the better team. 

‘They were the ones that were on the front foot and were the ones that were looking to win and were the ones that were winning every single second ball and every single tackle. And to a man I thought they were absolutely magnificent.’ 

He has enjoyed a decorated career with Bayern, winning 11 Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues
