‘What a game’: Gary Lineker leads fans revelling in the quality of Chelsea’s enthralling Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid

Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker joined scores of fans hailing the superb Champions League quarter-final between Real Madrid and Chelsea on Tuesday. 

Trailing 3-1 from the quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge last week, Chelsea went 3-0 up at the Bernabeu against the Spanish giants and were ahead 4-3 on aggregate as Thomas Tuchel’s side blitzed the hosts with a brilliant performance.

But individual mistakes allowed Real back into the game, and goals from Rodrygo and Karim Benzema – who scored a hat-trick in the first leg – saw Carlo Ancelotti’s men lose 3-2 on the night but win 5-4 on aggregate in a thrilling, see-saw encounter.

And fans quickly flocked to social media, along with TV host Lineker, to pay tribute to the quality of football on display. 

In a post to his 8.4million followers, liked nearly 11,000 times after less than two hours, he said: ‘What a game. The Champions League rarely disappoints.’ 

A fan added: ‘Champions League football at its (sic) best’. 

And fans quickly took to social media (pictured) to praise the quality of the football on display

Another tweeted: ‘Champions League doesn’t disappoint. What a game… #RealMadridChelsea’.

A third posted: ‘What a game of football this is #RMACHE’, while another Blues supporter said: ‘What a privilege it’s been to watch this game, one of our greatest performances’. 

Goals from Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner saw Chelsea three up – with a Marcos Alonso goal disallowed for handball – before Real took their chances ruthlessly to knock the reigning champions out of the competition.
