Gareth Southgate warns Jack Grealish there’s a line after boozy celebrations
Gareth Southgate warned party boy Jack Grealish there is a line when it comes to celebrations.
While the England boss admitted players in his day would be in big trouble if their nights out ended up on social media. Southgate refused to criticise Grealish’s partying or question if he should have reined it in just days out from two internationals.
Grealish, 27, went on a three-day bender to celebrate Manchester City’s Treble and was snapped guzzling vodka and other drinks as he toasted the success. The Three Lions boss had no intention of picking Grealish or his City team-mates for tonight’s Euro 2024 qualifier against 172nd-ranked Malta as they look to maintain their 100 per cent start to the campaign.
But he said: “There is a line. But in our head we weren’t thinking of including the City players for this game. But point No1, they all wanted to come in to be with the group, which is fantastic.

“We’ve had teams in the Champions League [final] but we haven’t had a team that has won a treble so for that group of players and staff, things will never be the same again because you never get that group together again and everything changes in their lives.”
When asked if he was comfortable with Grealish’s celebrations which included a trip to Ibiza, Southgate added: “But I think there is nothing to be served with me discussing that publicly. I have got a good squad to pick from.

“We weren’t considering those boys to start this game. We were hopeful they could play some part and that is still the case.” But Southgate reckons players when he played would get themselves in a lot more bother if their nights out were posted online.
He added: “What is different is that everyone posts everything. I wouldn’t have liked a few of my nights out to be posted publicly. My generation would have been in a lot more problems.”
