Gareth Southgate snubbed Beckham’s invitation to ‘white tie and diamonds’ party

Diamonds are not forever for England manager Gareth Southgate, as the Three Lions boss once shunned an invitation to a ‘white tie and diamonds’ party from David Beckham.

Twenty years ago, Southgate was called up to Sven-Goran Eriksson’s England squad for the 2002 World Cup in Asia. As a means of team bonding and perhaps displaying their gregariously, glamorous lifestyle, Beckham decided on hosting a rather posh event.

'White tie and diamonds’ was the theme and David and Victoria Beckham’s lavish ‘Beckingham Palace’ was the venue for this ultra exclusive affair. However, this was all a little bit much for Southgate, according to former England international Danny Mills.

“This letter comes through and it's proper fancy,” Mills said on the Undr the Cosh podcast. “I mean, sort of like parchment paper, this, that and the other, with little ribbons and everything else.

“[It says] ‘Dave and Victoria would like to invite you to their house for a pre-World Cup party, at Beckingham Palace’ bla bla bla. ‘Dress code is white tie and diamonds’ – what the f*** is white tie and diamonds?

“I’ve spoken to Gareth [Southgate] and he said ‘No I’m not going’. He said ‘I’m not doing it, it’s not for me, I’m not bothered’ and I was like ‘I get it, don’t blame you, I said I don’t think I’m going to bother either. My missus goes ‘we’re going!’

Southgate more often than not cuts a calm and understated person, whose only real interaction with a diamond would be if he deploys England with four in central midfield. And if we are to take his media presentation for gospel, then this party would have definitely gone over his head.

“I go off to this party and it is just ridiculous,” Mills replied, when asked which celebrities were there. “Elton John, Joan Collins, Mick Hucknall. We were sat at the back.” Mills added, “There was a huge marquee, there must have been a thousand people and we’ve got three tables at the back, these were supposedly for the players.

“In front of me, Steps, table to the side of that was Ray Winstone, I mean this is how far back they are. Then it goes they’ve got the Spice Girls, and you’re just sat there going ‘what the f*** is going on’.”
