Shamed Galatasaray defender Marcao has landed an eight-game ban from Turkish football bosses for his astonishing attack on a teammate during a match.

Furious Marcao confronted Turkey international Kerem Akturkoglu during their sides’ 2-0 victory over Giresunspor, headbutting the stunned winger before aiming two punches in his direction.

The Turkish Football Federation has confirmed that the Brazilian will sit out the lengthy ban and pay a fine of around £1,800 for the shameful incident.

The Brazilian was sent off following a VAR review by the referee detailing the outrageous scrap

Marcao, 25, issued a public apology to Akturkoglu and his parents on social media after the unsavoury altercation.

The disgraced star said: ‘I am a human just like you, but could not show exemplary behavior.

‘First, I apologise to Kerem’s mother and father… then I also apologise to my brother, Kerem, for my behavior.’

Akturkoglu is yet to offer a direct public response to Marcao, although he has shared a picture of the Galatasaray badge and a photo of himself celebrating with his teammates since the shocking scrap took place.

He has since given a grovelling apology through social media, calling Akturkoglu his ‘brother’

The 22-year-old is considered one of the most promising players in the Turkish giants’ squad, making his debut for Turkey against Azerbaijan in May.

Marcao has been a regular since joining the club on a three-and-a-half year deal in 2019.

Galatasaray’s manager, former Turkey boss Fatih Terim, called for calm after the match amid demands from some angry fans for Marcao to be axed. 

The under-fire culprit also said sorry to Terim, Galatasaray president Burak Elmas and supporters.

He told them: ‘I can understand that you may not want me anymore. I respect all the decisions [the club makes] about me.’
