Furious Premier League fans all say the same thing about ‘garbage’ new rules
Premier League fans have been left fuming over the “garbage” new rules introduced this season.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) recently announced several new rules for the 2023/24 campaign. They were on show for the first time during Arsenal and Manchester City’s Community Shield clash on Sunday.
But the ‘directives’ immediately sparked controversy, with Gunners midfielder Thomas Partey being booked early on for simply knocking the ball back after committing a foul – reportedly as a measure to combat time-wasting.
Viewers grew even more disgruntled as manager Mikel Arteta was yellow carded for dissent and City’s Julian Alvarez likewise for kicking the ball away. And fans online raged as the yellow cards quickly racked up, demonstrating a more extreme approach to officiating from the referees.

One Twitter user wrote: “Another season where the imbeciles at PGMOL impose ‘new rules’ on Arsenal then forget about them a week later.”
Another fumed: “Some of these new rules are garbage my word,” while a third tweeted: “Not too sure about these new rules, 17mins of added on time, and the refs absolutely yellow card happy and unapproachable!! Not working after week one!!”

A fourth vented: “While the new rules to combat gamesmanship are welcomed…. I’ll tell you what football absolutely doesn’t need. It’s referees getting busy & becoming the biggest part of the story.”
And a fifth added: “Ref books Mikel for waving an imaginary yellow card because ‘that’s the new rule’ but no yellow card for Silva body-checking Rice in midair causing him to land on his face.”
Another rule seemingly implemented during the final was one where an injured player receiving treatment had to wait 30 seconds before being allowed back onto the field. Commentator Lee Dixon was among those to voice his exasperation.
And the referee also made a conscious effort to add on more accurate minutes for stoppage time. The eleven additional minutes proved crucial as the Gunners scored an equaliser in the very last minute to force the game to penalties.
Additional injury time also proved a controversial move during the first round of matches in the EFL on Saturday afternoon.
