England fans wasted no time spreading their discontent with the referee in Saturday’s World Cup defeat to France, changing his Wikipedia page description to portray him as biased. Wilton Sampaio enraged English supporters with a series of questionable decisions throughout the quarter-final.

The Brazilian official handed England two penalties – albeit with the help of VAR, after waving off the second shout – but left Gareth Southgate’s side feeling aggrieved by ignoring what they felt were fouls. Fans and players were especially angered after a rough challenge on Bukayo Saka, where Dayot Upamecano didn’t touch the ball, led to France’s opener.

Saka was brought down several times throughout the high-stake encounter, but Sampaio wasn’t fazed by the cries of thousands for a decision to go their way. Harry Kane was also brought down on the edge of the area with what looked like a certain foul, only for Sampaio to tell the Three Lions captain to get up.

Fans were quick to showcase their anger by altering his Wikipedia description, writing: “Wilton Pereira Sampaio (born 28 December 1981) in Teresina de Goias, Goias, Brazil) is a French fan and Brazilian football referee. He was recently offered sexual favours by [Kylian] Mbappe for favourable decisions to France.”

England finally got their opening after the scorer of France’s first go-ahead goal, Aurelien Tchouameni, tripped Saka in the box shortly after half-time. Kane smashed his penalty past Tottenham Hotspur team-mate Hugo Lloris to give his nation the equaliser and the momentum.

That was halted by Olivier Giroud’s glancing header, leaving England with plenty of work to do again. But Sampaio entered the spotlight again after denying Mason Mount a penalty after Theo Hernandez felled him in the box immediately after coming on. VAR overturned his decision, but Kane couldn’t profit a second time.

There were other, more expletive, versions of Sampaio’s tinkered description that changed as the game went on, with some implying he was Welsh after England dumped them out at the group stage. But despite some decisions going Les Bleus’ way, Southgate will believe his side had the chances needed to progress.

France now face a historic semi-final against Morocco, who have only conceded once all tournament and have knocked out Belgium, Spain and Portugal on their way to becoming the first African nation to reach the World Cup’s final four.
