Fuming Leeds fans blame Jesse Marsch as top scorer Rodrigo is out for two months

Outraged Leeds United fans have blamed Jesse Marsch for a needless substitution with star man Rodrigo now set for a substantial spell on the sidelines.

The Spain international, 31, is the Yorkshire outfit's top scorer in the 2022/23 campaign, having already bettered his previous two Premier League returns. Not even at the halfway point of the season, Rodrigo has pummelled in an incredible 12 goals in the English top flight – only Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and Aleksandar Mitrovic have scored more.

However, Leeds' main goal threat is facing two months out of action after sustaining an ankle injury during their 3-0 win against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

Rodrigo did not start in the routine victory over the League One side but was brought on as a second-half substitute once Leeds had extended their superiority to three without reply. The devastating blow comes ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest this weekend before two back-to-back grudge matches with fierce rivals Manchester United.

Sitting just a point above the relegation zone, Leeds fans have been quick to point the finger at Marsch for the "unnecessary" substitution.

"People wonder why I’m not in the Marsch camp. 3-0 up against Accrington and brings Rodders on, just a bit thick," blasted one supporter. "3-0 up vs accrington and you bring him on?? what is the actual point," harked a second.

"It’s almost as if bringing him on when 3-0 up v Accrington was a bad idea??!!!!," slammed a third. "In a game where an appearance was unnecessary… ace," jibbed a fourth.

A statement from the Premier League club reads: "Rodrigo faces two months on the sidelines following an ankle injury sustained in last Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie at Accrington Stanley.

"The Spanish international, who has scored 12 goals so far this season in all competitions, suffered bone and ligament damage as a result of a challenge and has undergone minor surgery. The medical team at Thorp Arch are confident that Rodrigo will return to play by the end of March."
