Frenkie de Jong slams 'LIES' about his Barcelona salary

Frenkie de Jong slams ‘LIES’ about his ‘£16.8m-a-year Barcelona salary’ and claims his wage is not as ‘big’ as people think… before insisting he took a ‘three year’ pay cut at the start of his career with the LaLiga giants

  • Frenkie de Jong has rejected claims he is refusing to take a salary cut at Barca
  • De Jong said he accepted a lower rate during the first three years of his deal
  • The midfielder has also said that his salary looks a lot larger than it actually is

Frenkie de Jong has denied claims he is refusing to take a salary cut at Barcelona and revealed how he had accepted a lower rate during the first three years of his deal at the Nou Camp.

The Catalan giants offered de Jong a whopping £400,000-a-week deal after tax when he signed for the club three years ago. He was then handed an extremely lucrative extension under former president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

However, the Holland international has come under fire for his lofty salary given the fact the club are currently grappling with a financial crisis and trying to abide by LaLiga’s financial fair play rules.

De Jong was given a massive two-year extension by previous Barcelona president Bartomeu and is due to earn €20million (£16.8m) net this season and as much as €25m (£21m) the following campaign with £17m of deferred wages factored in.

However, it was previously reported that Barcelona had informed De Jong at the start of the season that they wanted to rip up his current contract and revert back to his initial deal from 2019 – when he first signed for the club.

Reports claimed that De Jong refused to take a salary cut and fans were furious with the 25-year-old. However, De Jong has set the record straight and said he agreed to a salary cut in the first three years of his career at the club before insisting his salary is not as big as people think.

Speaking to TV NOS, via Mundo Deportivo, De Jong said: ‘There have been many lies and falsehoods spread about my salary.

‘In each of the first 3 years I played here, I cut my salary. Eventually the money comes back, and it comes on top of my normal salary, so it looks bigger.

‘I think a lot of people don’t understand this, but the figures the media are spreading are false.’

De Jong has made it clear he wants to stay at Barcelona but the 25-year-old is said to be furious with the way he has been treated by Xavi this season.
