- Frenkie de Jong ran the show for Holland during their 3-2 victory over Wales

- He admitted that he is ‘flattered’ by interest shown in him from the Red Devils
Frenkie de Jong admitted he was ‘flattered’ by interest from Manchester United after the Holland midfielder turned in a dazzling display in their 3-2 win over Wales.
The Barcelona star is United’s top summer target as new boss Erik ten Hag looks to be reunited with the player who was such a key man for him during their time at Ajax.
Asked about United’s pursuit of him, De Jong said: ‘You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player but I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.’
Frenkie de Jong has admitted he is ‘flattered’ by Manchester United’s interest shown in him
His former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag has made De Jong his number one target this summer
De Jong is valued at about £70million by Barcelona and is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the game.
He ran the show for the Dutch for much of the game against Wales, who nearly escaped with a draw despite going 2-0 down.
Sportsmail previously reported that United’s interest in Denmark star Christian Eriksen does not rule out a move for De Jong who is seen as their number one target.
Eriksen’s availability as a free agent is an attractive proposition for United who are working on a limited budget this summer after failing to qualify for the Champions League.
De Jong stole the show for the Netherlands as they defeated Wales 3-2 on Tuesday night
Although the former Tottenham and Ajax star is 30-years-old and No 10 is not a priority position for United – with Donny van de Beek set to return to Old Trafford as competition for Bruno Fernandes – the club need to replace three attacking midfielders following the departures of Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba who was on Tuesday night close to rejoining Juventus.
United see De Jong as a different type of midfielder and will continue negotiations with Barcelona over the £70m-rated former Ajax star regardless of any move for Eriksen.
It’s understood that United have yet to make a formal bid for the 25-year-old Holland international, but are prepared to walk away from the deal and pursue other options if the two sides cannot compromise on price.
De Jong though did say that he currently plays for the ‘biggest club’ in world football
De Jong played under Ten Hag when Ajax reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 before joining Barcelona.
Last month, Barcelona manager Xavi said in regards to De Jong: ‘For me he is a very important player. He has been a starter almost all the time.
‘He is a fundamental footballer but then there is the economic situation, on which we all depend.
‘We need to know the financial situation in order to make some decisions and then we will take one decision or another – I don’t mean with Frenkie – I mean in general.
‘He is a player that I like a lot, but we will see what the situation is.’
