Fred risks wrath of Man Utd legends with verdict on season under Solskjaer

Fred has risked the wrath of Manchester United legends Roy Keane and Gary Neville after his verdict on their season.

It comes after another year without any silverware after failing to land the Europa League.

There have been reasons to be happy with the campaign, including an incredible unbeaten streak away from home this year in the Premier League.

Bruno Fernandes has also been a shining light but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be forgiven for feeling rueful.

After crashing out of the Champions League at the group stage, the Red Devils were made the favourites to win the Europa League.

They got to the final only to be beaten by Villarreal on penalties but Fred has seen the season as a success.

“Definitely, for me the team's done really well and been growing over the season," the Brazilian told United's official website.

"We didn't start that well as we didn't have a pre-season. We had the Europa League semi-final which prolonged [our last term].

"We didn't have a pre-season and got better and better over the season and reached the final.

"I think overall the team's had a great season, we could have achieved more, we wanted to win more trophies, but I think generally it's been a great season.”

That is unlikely to go down well with the likes of Keane and Neville – who have always insisted that United should be winning the top prizes on a yearly basis.

Particularly Keane, who has savaged Fred in the past by insisting his former club will not win any silverware with him in the team.

After a dismal 4-2 loss to Liverpool, he said: “I just look at the performance tonight of the two midfielders. McTominay is a good honest player, and they’ve got Fred.

“As long as those two players are playing in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.

“Okay, they have got the Europa League final in a few weeks. But they are only there because they came up short in the Champions League."
