Frank Lampard’s Chelsea banner to be removed from Stamford Bridge after Tuchel appointment

Chelsea v Wolves: Match in pictures

Chelsea will take down the Frank Lampard banner at Stamford Bridge following the game against Wolves on Wednesday evening. Thomas Tuchel replaced the club’s all-time top scorer following his dismissal earlier in the week.

The Blues legend was axed after a number of inconsistent results this season, including defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City and Leicester City since Boxing Day.

Failing to get the best out of big summer buys Timo Werner and Kai Havertz also contributed to his downfall.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss Tuchel has taken over with his first game against Wolves. And Chelsea fan group ‘We Are The Shed’ have confirmed that the Lampard banner – which reads ‘In Frank We Trust. Then. Now. Forever’ – will be removed after the Premier League fixture out of respect to Tuchel.

“We asked for the banner to stay in place for today’s game in honour of Lampard and what he achieved with us,” the supporters group tweeted.

“We have also asked for it to be removed after tonight out of respect to Tuchel and his staff.”

Lampard broke his silence on his dismissal on Monday evening, expressing his disappointment at the decision.

“It has been a huge privilege and an honour to manage Chelsea, a club that has been a big part of my life for so long,” Lampard said.

“Firstly, I would like to thank the fans for the incredible support that I have received over the last 18 months. I hope they know what that means to me.

“When I took on this role I understood the challenges that lay ahead in a difficult time for the football club.

“I am proud of the achievements that we made, and I am proud of the academy players that have made their step into the first team and performed so well. They are the future of the club.

“I am disappointed not to have had the time this season to take the club forward and bring it to the next level.

“I want to thank Mr Abramovich, the board, players, my coaching team and everyone at the club for their hard work and dedication, especially in these unprecedented and challenging times.

“I wish the team and the club every success for the future.”

Tuchel took charge of Chelsea training on Tuesday, only hours after being appointed as boss, before taking to the dugout at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.
