Frank Lampard predicts race for Premier League title will be wide open

Frank Lampard talks up Manchester United and Liverpool as Premier League title contenders as he hails Ole Gunar Solskjaer’s ‘really impressive signings’ and the Reds’ returning stars

  • Frank Lampard claims that the race for the title is wide open this year
  • He hailed Man Utd’s signings as ‘impressive’ and expects them to challenge
  • Lampard has also tipped Liverpool following return of Van Djik and Gomez

Frank Lampard has predicted that the race for the Premier League title will be close and has tipped Manchester United and Liverpool to challenge alongside Manchester City in the upcoming season.

Lampard’s former club Chelsea are on the verge of completing the signing of Romelu Lukaku for £98million.

The signing of Lukaku – who scored 30 goals in all competitions last season, will come as a relief to Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel – who is looking to build on last season’s Champions League triumph.

Frank Lampard says the race for the Premier League title will not be a two horse race

Similarly, Manchester City completed a big signing of their own last week, having purchased Jack Grealish for £100m – leading to talks of a two horse-race for the title.

Lampard has however squashed those talks and insists that the title race will be wide open.

When asked whether he expects the title race to be between Chelsea and Manchester City, he told Sky Sports News: ‘No, I don’t think you can discount Manchester United.

Man Utd will have a title-charge in their sights following the signing of Jadon Sancho

‘They were not far off last year and they’ve gone again and I think brought in really impressive signings.

‘And I think Liverpool will be the same. They missed huge players through injury for a big part of last season and the year before they were one of the best teams we’ve seen in the Premier League.

‘So you definitely can’t discount those as much as you can’t discount the teams pushing those from beneath or just behind.’

Like Manchester City and Chelsea – Manchester United have also spent heavily following the £73m signing of Jadon Sancho and are on the verge of announcing the signing of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane for £42m.

Liverpool will welcome the return of centre backs Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Djik ahead of the new season which kicks off on Friday night.
